My Quick Trip to Louisiana...

HBO was free this past weekend so I decided to give the very popular True Blood another try. I did see the very first episode but I wasn't impressed. Didn't care for any of the characters except maybe Sookie's boss at the restaurant. Sookie, I didn't care for. Her accent got on my nerves and listening to the voices in her head got irritating.

But I kept hearing about the show on blogs, twitter and of course the ads on TV. So I thought I'd give it another try cause I'm all about the free. :)

Free is not always good.

My first clue of how gross things could get started out with this sulky teenager watching TV with his dad. Sounds harmless enough right? The scary part is the dad is only wearing tighty-whities and those suckers were anything but white! And the camera stayed on the dad as he got up to holler for ma. My eyes, my eyes! But little did I know there was something even more disgusting in store.

I was expecting blood and guts because it's cable and I was fine to a point. That point being when Sookie's vampire boyfriend/fiance fucks another vampire and literally twists her head while doing it. Yes, her head twisted, her neck looking like Silly Putty, no quick snap, just twisting round until she was facing backwards. I found myself reaching out blindly for the remote while desperately trying to pull my eyes away from the screen. Bill, the vampire of the twisting head fetish, was mad as hell with Lorena, receiver of twisted head, but holy crap talk about over the top.

My conclusion - I'll read the books.

Mad Men ~ Are You Watching It?...

According to AskMen the most influential man of 2009 is Don Draper. Who? The name doesn't ring a bell? Didn't for me so I checked out the story here. Turns out the most influential man of the year isn't even real, he's a fictional character from AMC's show Mad Men. I've heard some good things about the show but for some reason I haven't had the urge to start watching it. And why are they doing this now? Shouldn't they wait until the year is over?

So why is it that not only was a fictional character chosen but he's not even from the current time period? He's an ad exec from the 1960's.

Draper illustrates old-school values even though he often fails to meet them himself. His human flaws are what make him so relevant to men today. He is by turns a chain-smoking, drinking-in-the-office emblem of a bygone age, and an unusually real, earnest human being who illustrates the struggles modern men know all too well.

Aside from the chain-smoking, he sounds like he could be one of the alpha males we love to read about. Was a fictional character chosen because we can accept their flaws and misdeeds far easier than a real, living person? Or was a fictional character chosen this year because people especially need that escape from reality? And who would have been chosen had this poll been taken on a woman's site? Perhaps President Obama would have made it higher than #3? I think maybe I'll just check out Don and see what he's all about.

New Season ~ Sons of Anarchy

I don't watch much television, there's just not a lot on that I like. I'd rather be reading, blog hopping or hanging out with the kids. But one show I do like and have been looking forward to the new season is Sons of Anarchy.

Why do I like this show? For the same reasons I like certain books. It's different. The characters are varied and definitely not your run of the mill television characters. No one on this show could really be considered nice and some are down right evil. The dimensions of the characters simply fascinate me. Just when I think I know what a character will do in a situation they completely surprise me. The show is gritty, dirty and at times even sexy. Charlie Hunnam plays the lead of Jackson 'Jax" Teller, he's a bad boy who tries to be good but just can't quite make it over to the good guys side. Which is perfectly fine with me. Katy Segal and Ron Pearlman play Jax's mom and step dad. They are both "bad guys" but their consciences do make appearances every now and then and it usually pisses them off when that happens. LOL


The new season starts September 8 on FX.
