Friday Video - Warcraft Movie

I don't play this video game but who hasn't heard of it? I knew a little about it from friends who play and from The Big Bang Theory because of course the guys on there play it. Remember the episode where Sheldon's account was hacked? If you've seen that episode, you know about as much as I do about the game. When I first saw the trailer, I couldn't help but think this would be an exciting movie to see on the big screen. Everything is absolutely epic!

Two words - Travis Fimmel. Oh, I know who he is. Any Vikings fans?

The Magnificent Seven Movie

Oh, I was so happy to see this trailer! I loved the original movie, remember watching it with my dad. This looks like it has all the action, humor and western grit that I love in my western movies as well as western romances.

The movie is not out until this fall so until then you could get in the mood by reading a western romance, or six. I'd recommend The Rock Creek Six series by Lori Handeland and Linda Devlin aka Linda Winstead Jones. This series is a lot of fun. I enjoyed every book, some more than others.

And it stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt!

Assassin's Creed - The Movie

How did I not know this was coming out?! This is a favorite gaming series of mine and the trailer looks like the movie could actually be worth seeing. Although I'm not crazy about the song. The song does not fit the movie.

It doesn't come out until this December but maybe I could sneak away to see it for my birthday. :)  It stars Michael Fassbender whom I've heard of but have no idea who he is, if that makes any sense. Now if only the Borderlands gaming series would get a movie.

Cowboys and Aliens and Movie Trailers...

I love western movies. I also like the Alien movies (just the 1st two) and scifi movies in general. Combine those two elements and you get a fascinating, action-packed movie right? Uh...no.

I had such high hopes for this movie. I mean, Daniel Craig! I do like him but not so much in this one. Aside from looking good in a vest and out of it, his character came across as two dimensional. The other big name was Harrison Ford who lately seems like the same character, just a different movie.

*Some spoilers*

The plot is your basic aliens capture humans to study them for any weaknesses while they exploit Earth's resources, namely gold. Daniel Craig's character managed to get away but he now has amnesia. He also has a shiny bracelet that he can't remove. Okay, the bracelet was pretty cool. So, Craig's character, Jake Lonergan (a romance hero name if I ever heard one!), Jake heads into town after waking up in the middle of nowhere with no memory of how he got there. He has a confrontation with the local bully who also happens to be the son of a wealthy rancher aka Harrison Ford's character Woodrow Dolarhyde (yes, that's his name). It turns out Jake is a wanted man. Oops. I'll bet it would have been nice to remember that little fact.

But no worries, he won't be in jail for long because the aliens are coming to town. They come, they blow things up, they abduct townsfolk and generally scare the crap out of everyone. One alien does crash land and after killing one of the townsfolk, heads out of town, leaving alien tracks behind. Well, you know what's coming next - it's posse time! It's time for everyone to work together to rescue the family and friends who were abducted. I think there was just about every western cliche you could think of in this movie. Except for the whole alien thing. :)

As the posse tracks the big bad alien they travel through what is suppose to be the Arizona territory of 1873. I don't know if it was filmed in Arizona but it does look like very rugged terrain. Not a soul in sight, or so you'd think. First they run into Jake's old gang. Now at the this point I had lost track of how many times I'd yawned. But I perked up as soon as I saw Walton Goggins. Who you say? He plays Boyd Crowder on one of the best shows on TV - Justified. So with renewed interested I held out hope that things would pick up. Yeah, there was some alien fighting and more abductions then another cliche pops up in the form of the Apaches. This is when things got really weird. LOL

Eventually we get to the big showdown with the aliens. Things get blown up, people die, aliens die. Jake sheds his outlaw persona and becomes a hero. Sacrifices are made and the ones who survive have a new appreciation for life and become better people for it.

Not much else to say, except the aliens were pretty cool and gross in that alien way that all aliens are. Big and gooey with alien hands that pop out of their middles. That was pretty cool. :)

My verdict - unless you're a real diehard Craig, Ford or cowboy and/or alien fan, save your money and wait for the DVD.

Trailers...

One thing I like about going to the movies is seeing the trailers. I was in for a treat since I got to see the Conan trailer again. Nothing like a bigger than life Jason Momoa to put a smile on your face. :)

There was also a trailer for the movie Battleship, release May 2012. Not sure how I feel about this one. It has Taylor Kitsch which is a positive. (Still can't believe no more Friday Night Lights), Liam Neeson and that guy from True Blood, Alexander Skarsgård. It's the plot that has me thinking this might be a wait for the DVD kind of movie. It's basically transformers at sea. So, I guess we'll see. :)

And speaking of Friday Night Lights (still missing it) Brad Pitt has a new movie coming out next month called Moneyball. I'm not a big Brad Pitt fan and I'm not crazy about baseball but this looks really good. It has a Friday Night Lights feel to it and it's based on a true story. And there was even a book about it. It's about the Oakland A's and how they went from being really, really bad to being a winning team. I might actually go see this one.

Geez, just how many times can I mention Friday Night Lights in one post? Apparently a lot! Still missing it. :(

Holy Trifecta of Hotness!!!

The boys and I indulged in some popcorn, Dr. Pepper and boy humor when we went to see the latest Wimpy Kid movie. It was pretty good. But that's not what got me excited. It was the giant pop out poster directly outside our theater that captured my gaze. In it were Paul Walker, Vin Diesel and The Rock. All in the same movie!

Fast Five (release date April 29) is the next installment of the Fast & Furious franchise. These movies are one of my guilty pleasures and anytime I spot one on TV, I must stop what I'm doing and watch.


Looks like Johnson might have a couple inches on Vin Diesel. And what about the stache and goatee? I'm picky about facial hair. I like it as long as it's neat - no ZZ Top beards for me. But this works. You know what I like most about Vin Diesel? His voice. Love that deep, sexy voice of his.

What I like about The Rock? Those arms! I know peeps always talk about the abs, six-pack etc, but what gets me quicker than anything are well defined arms. Because if the arms are well done, the rest follows. :)



I will confess to having a crush on Paul Walker ever since I saw him in the movie Pleasantville. And oh, my how he has grown up! Who doesn't watch at least part of Into the Blue when they come across it playing on TV if only to see Walker in those low slung swim trunks?






Yes, it's over the top but that's why it's a guilty pleasure! :)


And if by chance, fast cars and sexy guys are not your thing. I also saw the preview for THOR (release date May 6). This is staring Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth. I'll admit I didn't know who Hemsworth was and had to Google. Looks like he was the doomed George Kirk in the last Star Trek movie. What I did find that was interesting is that he will be in a movie called Red Dawn which is a remake of the 1984 movie of the same name which starred Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, C. Thomas Howell and Charlie Sheen before he was an asshat. Loved that movie with these kids who transform themselves into commandos. Loved that it didn't give us a picture perfect happy ending either.

Anyway, back to THOR, (for some reason I feel the need to use all caps). The trailer was playing while we waited to buy tickets. It actually looks pretty cool. Lots of action of course but it might have a plot in there too.




So what are some of your guilty pleasures when it come to the movies? They may not be considered cinema masterpieces but they sure do entertain us!

Gulliver's Travels, Jack Black's Belly & Eric Bana To Make It All Better...

Last Friday the boys, the husband and myself ventured to the movies to see not one but two epic 3D features. Middle wanted to see Tron, youngest wanted to see Gulliver's Travels. Guess what I got to see? Jack Black's naked belly - a lot!

So Gulliver's Travels wasn't that bad but if I never see Jack Black shirtless again it will be too soon! I can't really recommend the movie unless you are a young boy, my youngest is 9. The movie relied on what I refer to as "boy humor" with bodily functions, fluids and general grossness which youngest loved. So I liked it by default. There were a couple of times when I glanced at youngest and he gave me a big grin. Added bonus - movie popcorn! Word from the Tron camp - awesome! Hubs said Tron was good and was just happy he didn't have to see Jack Black's naked belly. :)

After the movies the boys compared notes.

Middle to youngest: Was there any making out? *grins*
Youngest: No, just some kissing.
Me to youngest: Do you know what making out is?
Youngest: Lots and lots of kissing. *grins*

While at the movies I did see a poster for the upcoming I Am Number Four, based on the book of the same name which I reviewed here. I'm curious about it, it has Timothy Olyphant (Justified back on next month on FX!) and I liked the story. Here's the trailer. ~



Then there's Eric Bana who I seriously love! He has a new movie coming out in April that looks creepy fantastic! It's called Hanna and it also stars a big bad Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan who was in The Lovely Bones. There's something about a kid trained as an assassin that appeals to me even though I know it shouldn't. The trailer certainly grabbed my interest. ~



Did anyone take in a movie or two over the holidays? Any thing you can recommend? I'd like to see True Grit and hubs said he would too so we'll try for this coming weekend. I'd also like to see Tangled but the boys refuse so I'll wait for the DVD.

Cowboys & Aliens Movie Trailer...

Cowboys must be the new vampires. Can you imagine a western Twilight? Cowboys & Aliens comes out next summer and it's a western - love westerns! With Daniel Craig & Harrison Ford. And cowboys with some cool alien toys. It sounds silly and has a cheesy title but still. . .

The Tourist ~ Johnny Depp

I'm not a fan of Angelina Jolie but I've adored Johnny Depp, ever since he was on 21 Jump Street. And after watching the trailer, I can only say he gets better and better with age. I'm not crazy about the scruffy facial hair, but I like it on him. He even makes pjs look good! The movie looks smart and funny with some action thrown in.

So, anyone else plan on seeing this movie somehow, someway in the midst of the craziness of holiday shopping?


The Tourist is set for release December 10, 2010.

Resident Evil: Afterlife Trailer

Some of my favorite, just all out fun movies to watch are the Resident Evil movies. The fourth in the franchise, Resident Evil: Afterlife is due out next Friday, the 10th. No Oded Fehr. :( I was sorry when he died in the last one. But, there is Wentworth Miller this time around! The trailer definitely has a Matrix feel to it.

And really, who doesn't want to be Alice when they grow up?!

Need More Twilight in Your Life?...

I never got into the Twilight craze but I can imagine how it can get to you after a while. It's everywhere, not just the bookstores but grocery stores, Walmart, Target, well, you get the idea. :) Anyway, I saw this trailer for a Twilight-ish spoof called Vampires Suck and got a few laughs. I won't see it on the big screen but it could be fun for some mindless home entertainment when it comes on DVD after a few months.

Any fun plans for the weekend? Maybe some mindless home entertainment? :) It's been a while since I've been to Blockbuster so I'm overdue. What should I rent this weekend?


Vampires Suck Trailer

Ryan Reynolds and My Biggest Fear...

Aside from something happening to my family, my biggest fear is being buried alive. It goes back to when I was a kid and saw this movie where this girl was kidnapped and buried alive with enough oxygen and electricity to keep her alive for a specific amount of time. It stayed with me to the point where I'm afraid I'll die but won't really be dead but medical personal will think I am. Crazy I know but...

So what does the ultra hot Ryan Reynolds have to do with this? He's living out my worst nightmare. In a movie.







Here's the description ~ Paul Conroy is not ready to die. But when he wakes up 6 feet underground with no idea of who put him there or why, life for the truck driver and family man instantly becomes a hellish struggle for survival. Buried with only a cell phone and a lighter, his contact with the outside world and ability to piece together clues that could help him discover his location are maddeningly limited.

It was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in January and is due for nation wide release this October. I don't know if I'll see this in the theater. If I do, dh is definitely coming with me. That man can make me laugh at the oddest times and with this movie, I might need that.

Eat, Pray, Love Movie

After seeing the movie trailer, I want to read the book. Anyone read the book? I know it was real popular, might still be on the NY Times list. I actually have it around here somewhere...





The trailer looks really good. Some might say it's a chick flick but I think it's more. Similar to Under the Tuscan Sun, which I really liked and yeah that's no doubt considered a chick flick too. Even though the main character is female, I still think there are things that a man could relate to. Plus guys still think Julia Roberts is hot right?

Much of what she said resonated with me. I couldn't take off for a year but there are definitely times when I'd like to take a road trip and just focus on me, if only for a few days. I think I will take off to the movies this summer and see this. Maybe even drag dh along. :)

Happy 2010!!!

Happy New Year! Did anyone go to parties and kiss a stranger at midnight? Yeah, me neither. :) We're pretty low key around here. The kids and I stayed up until 2 am. Which is why I was still in my pjs at noon today. :D It's been a lazy morning and nothing more strenuous is planned for the rest of the day but going to the movies to see Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. I'm still not sure how/why I agreed to go see it. My guess is that one of the boys asked me while I was reading and I said "sure" without realizing what I was agreeing to. That's okay, movie popcorn will be my treat for sitting through a bunch of squeaking chipmunks. I think Alvin and the boys get girlfriends. LOL

Sunday we, dh and me, might go see Sherlock Holmes. Anyone seen it? I've read some good and some okay reviews for it. It looks good but could be the previews are the best parts.

Tomorrow is full of errands and shopping. And reading, always some reading. :) I'll post my favorite reads of 2009 a little later. And Christine has a cool meme up at her blog that I want to do this weekend. Go check it out and do your own post. I think they'll be fun to read. :D

Zombie Clowns...

I'm not crazy about clowns and I'm not crazy about zombies. The only zombie movies I do like are the Resident Evil franchise - I want to be Alice when I grow up. :)

So zombie clowns would fall low on my list of must see. But for the new movie, Zombieland, coming out next month, I might make an exception.

Woody Harrelson is probably one of the few that could actually make me laugh while zombies are busy munching away on their slow moving victims.



And I mentioned the Resident Evil movies which I love and I might be loving even more since the current rumor has Jensen Ackles of Supernatural (scroll down for Supernatural love) playing in the next movie, Resident Evil: Afterlife, due for release next July. Jensen and Milla - perfect. I'm there!

Movie Review: The Outsider

Johnny Gault (Tim Daly) is a cold-blooded gunslinger who wasn't looking for trouble but finds it when he rides into a dusty little town. An escalating feud over land between ranchers and new settlers is ready to explode into violence. As tensions mount, Johnny gets involved with a beautiful settler (Naomi Watts) and the fight becomes personal. Now it's the outsider who will need to settle the score in a final face-to-face showdown.


Stunning and beautifully acted adaptation of Penelope Williamson novel of the same name. The Outsider (Showtime/2002) tells the story of Rebecca Yoder, a woman of the Plain People. The Plain People believe in a strict life of no violence and that God will take care of them. Rebecca is recently widowed and is alone with only her young son. When notorious gunslinger Johnny Gault stumbles onto Rebecca's land she takes him home and nurses him back to health.


Tim Daly has played a number of different roles but I remember him best from the show Wings. In The Outsider he plays Johnny Gault who is a very bad man. Just the way I like them. :) Daly played this role surprisingly well. He was dark, violent, coarse and wicked, often just to get a reaction out of Rebecca. As Johnny he seems to relish his reputation as a killer. It's what he knows and what he's good at. He is confused by Rebecca's beliefs, especially after finding out her husband was killed because he would not fight back. Johnny even offers to kill the men who killed Rebecca's husband. He figures he owes her for saving his life. I really liked the character of Johnny and the way he changed over the course of the movie.


The movie opens with Rebecca and her husband in bed. You definitely get the sense that Rebecca isn't shy when it comes to sex. Not that she's promiscuous but that she loved her husband and loved the physical side of their relationship. She was at times a very simple woman who lived her beliefs and kept her faith in God. After some time with Johnny she didn't question those beliefs so much as begin to interpret them in a different way. She still doesn't believe that violence is the answer and tells Johnny this a number of times. He doesn't want to give up his guns since this is all he knows.

The movie worked on so many level. The relationship of Johnny and Rebecca and how she was afraid of him but felt it was her duty to save him because of her beliefs. Johnny comes to realize that violence isn't always the answer. There is also the range war going on and Rebecca and her sheep ranch are right in the middle of it.


Overall this was a wonderful story of two people who despite everything are attracted to each other to the point of going against their beliefs. The scenery was beautiful and the acting superb. Tim Daly as Johnny was smoking hot. He had that cool, "I don't give a damn" attitude down pat. Naomi Watts as Rebecca made for an admirable opponent to Johnny. There were also some scenes of humor that only added to the realism of the story. The drama of their everyday lives played out while their love story grew. When they do sleep together the sex is hot and both Rebecca and Johnny give and take. Their passion seems to take them by surprise for there was nothing quick or sedate about the love scenes. Their physical relationship merely adds another dimension to their bond.

If you are in the mood for a splendid love story then I would recommend The Outsider.

Great casting with Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving. I'm getting DH to take me for Valentines Day. LOL Perfect gift. :) I still remember seeing the old Lon Chaney B&W movie on TV when I was a kid. I loved it even while it scared the heck out of me.

Going to the Movies...

The youngest munchkin and I finally saw Transformers. He's the only one that seems to like going to the movies. The other two would rather stay home playing video games or surfing the web. I might be able to drag them to see Harry Potter next week but I'm not counting on it. :)

Anyway, if you liked the first Transformers then you'll probably like the second. I don't really care for the people. The main guy, Sam, is annoying so I generally tune him out. I much prefer the Autobots and the Decepticons. (Those are the good transformers and the bad transformers).

I did enjoy the previews. First up was M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender. His movies have been hit or miss with me, mostly miss. I did like Signs with Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a cartoon that the kids watched and I actually liked. The movie version is live action, not animated and looked amazing. It comes out next summer and I'll definitely drag my movie buddy Nick, to see it.





Do you remember the movie Office Space? Well, the people who did Office Space have a new movie coming out in September called Extract. It looks pretty funny but might be one of those that I wait for the DVD.




The last preview was for Funny People. I've been seeing this one on TV lately but didn't really pay attention. The preview at the theater looked good. Another one I'll keep in mind for DVD release.

And of course we saw the preview for the next Harry Potter movie which comes out tonight at midnight. The theater is having a special contest for people who show up dressed as their favorite character. I went to Barnes and Noble for the last two book release parties and that was too crowded for my liking. I can only imagine what the movie will be like.

Star Trek, Will Ferrell and moving seats...

The plan was to see Night at the Museum. My 7 year old changed the plan as in he changed his mind. So Alpha Guy and I went to see Star Trek. We even got in the first showing, only $5.50 each. Add in popcorn and soda put us around $20 ~ not bad. Guess I'm a cheap date. :)

I'm not a trekkie - need to make that disclaimer. In fact I never like the original Star Trek. My brother always wanted to watch it and for that fact alone I didn't like it. Thought it was lame. Same thing with Batman. He liked it so I didn't. Simple kid logic.

Fast forward to Star Trek TNG. Now this one I liked. Had a secret crush on Worf. ;) Never did get into any of the other Star Trek series. Just wasn't the same without Picard.


The movie ~ liked it a whole bunch. I went ahead to get seats while dh got the snacks. I started laughing when I got in the theater. I was the only one there! It was 25 minutes before the show started so we did end up with about 12 people total but still a vast improvement over the previous week of long lines and crowded theaters.

There were a few parts that bugged me, the beginning for one. But overall a very enjoyable show. Kirk was a real likable smart ass and Spock was well, Spock. He did have a big nose, that's what I noticed first. *shrugs* Oh, I liked Bones a lot. He was perfect. His interactions with Kirk were classic! And with Uhura I kept thinking she was Jada Pinkett Smith but she's not. Uhura is played by Zoe Saldana. Never heard of her but she was good. Chekov was adorable - talk about jail bait! And Winona Ryder was Spock's mom?! Didn't recognize her at all.

We also saw the preview for Land of the Lost. Does anyone remember the TV series? The one from the 70's from the creative (scary) minds of Sid and Marty Krofft. I used to watch it when I was a kid. Watched Krofft shows every Saturday morning. H. R. Puffnstuff and Electra Woman and Dynagirl along with Land of the Lost and some others that I've apparently block from my mind.

The Will Ferrell version has potential or the previews showed the best parts - could go either way. The kids might want to see it or maybe I could find a copy of the original on ebay...

And saw the DBox seats. They do move - also cost $8 extra. I don't think it would be worth it. More info here if you're interested.

The Movie Experience...

When I was checking out movie times, we're going to see the latest Night at the Museum movie, I noticed that for Terminator Salvation (must see soon) it's being shown in D-Box.

Has anyone ever experienced this "D-Box" and is it worth the extra charge? We don't go to the movies that much and I've never heard of this. Is it like IMAX? Does the chair move?

We're also going to attempt once again to see Star Trek. We went last Sunday, got there 20 minutes before the show and the only seats left were in the first two rows. Yikes! No thanks. We decided to skip it since the rest of the showings would also be packed, even if we didn't have to sit in the first two rows. I'm hoping this weekend won't be as bad since the Terminator movie is out so maybe people will go to that one instead. *fingers crossed*

Just in case you haven't seen it here's a trailer for Terminator Salvation. I sill remember seeing the first Terminator movie. Didn't know anyone in it except for Arnold from his Conan movie. Got a crush on Michael Biehn, loved him later in Aliens. And Linda Hamilton went on to fame by playing beauty to Ron Pearlman's beast.

This installment of the franchise looks a whole lot better than the last and with Christian Bale it's hard to go wrong. And there is a Terminator 5 listed at IMDB. Dated for 2011. No other info unless you subscribe to IMDBPro.
