TBR Challenge:The Nine Lives of Christmas

Didn't think I was going to make it this month.  I actually read the book last week but then forgot to write the review.  Not sure how this made it's way into the TBR pile.  The most likely scenario is that I was trying to get in the holiday mood last year and picked this up at the Friends of the Library book sale.  They always have a display of holiday themed books right before Christmas.  My guess is people read them, then in the holiday spirit, pass them on by donating them.  Then the library sells them to someone like me who thinks she'll have plenty of time to read the dozens of holiday themed books she has because it's not busy at all right before Christmas. *rolls eyes*

The blurb gives a pretty good idea of the story.  And yes, we do get part of the story from the Point of View of Ambrose the cat.  He's actually quite amusing most of the time.  I thought it might become annoying, having Ambrose's thoughts on the page but he's a wise cat who's on his last life.  He's learned a thing or two from his past lives and past experiences with humans and is more than willing to share his opinions.

Zach is a hero who has sworn off serious relationships of any kind.  He doesn't even want to keep Ambrose, who he renames Tom, since having a cat is too much of a commitment.  And he definitely doesn't want to get involved with Merilee because she is most certainly the relationship type.  So this attitude of Zach's causes him some trouble when he can't seem to stop making up excuses for seeing Merilee.  Like so many heroes who have come before him, Zach is a goner and he doesn't even know it.  

Merilee has a strong affinity for animals.  She works at the local mega pet store as well as the animal shelter.  She is a walking encyclopedia of animal facts.  She's sweet, compassionate but not at all Zach's usual type.  Then she goes through a metamorphisis when her sister decided to take Merilee on a shopping spree.  It was a sweet bit of sister bonding but I do wish Zach and Merilee's relationship had been further along before she went from ho-hum to totally hot.  

The romance has a bit of a stop and go feel to it.  Just when you think these two are making progress, they backpedal a little.  It's a very sweet story, possibly a little sweet for some.  And although Zach is a firefighter, there isn't too much focus on his job other than a few scenes that show how much he enjoys and is dedicated to firefighting.   

The Nine Lives of Christmas was a funny, sweet romance.  I could easily see it as a made-for-TV holiday movie.  It's not a type of romance I would want to read too many of for fear of a sugar overdose.  But if it sounds like your kind of romance then give it a try.

A friends to lovers story is one of my favorite tropes and Holly Lane certainly delivers. Not only do these friends take their friendship into the bedroom, they deepen their friendship, learning more about each other.

Sue Ann Simpkins is trying to recover from her divorce while keeping the holidays happy for her young daughter. It's not easy with her recent ex-husband being such an ass but she's trying. Between the holiday stress and dealing with her idiot of an ex, Sue Ann continues to encounter Adam Becker. They do live in a small town but Adam does seem to pop up a lot! LOL I really enjoyed seeing these two take their hesitant steps from friends to lovers. The lovers part happened quickly but it was the deepening friendship and the falling in love that really sparked the story.

Adam Becker is at loose ends after his twin boys go on vacation with Adam's ex in-laws, leaving Adam alone during the holidays. He's reaches out to his best friend's ex-wife who also happens to be a childhood friend of Adam's. See, small town. Adam is pulled in two directions, between his growing feelings for Sue Ann and his long time friendship with her ex. There were times when I wanted to smack Adam for even thinking of siding with Jeff, Sue Ann's ex. I get the long time friendship but Jeff treated Sue Ann horribly and how anyone could side with him was beyond me. Adam lost a few points for that but gained them back in his wooing of Sue Ann. He really was a sweet and sexy guy!

The days leading up to Christmas are not only filled with Sue Ann and Adam's growing romance but with catching up with the heroes and heroines from the previous books. This is one of the reasons I like romance series. I love seeing how everyone is doing - it's like a little family reunion.

Holly Lane is another sweet, funny, emotional romance in this wonderful series. I found it a great way to spend a few hours and look forward to more from Destiny, Ohio.

Happy Holidays!

It's Christmas night here and let me tell you it's been a long, long day. It was good seeing the extended family but it's also good to be home and winding down. The kids are playing with their new video games and I'm huh, doing laundry and catching up on emails. (This laundry thing on Christmas is becoming a bad habit.)

This was a sweet, quick read with a holiday theme but a very different location. The cruise ship gets both Sophia and Ethan away from everything familiar and lets them concentrate on enjoying each other. It's finally time for them to take the next step in their relationship and the romantic Caribbean is the perfect setting.

Sophia loved her husband Dan very much. That's never in doubt. But he's gone and she's not sure what her next step should be. Her heart knows what it wants but she's afraid to take the chance. The previous Christmas was so hard to get through so Sophia decides to get away but her daughter and her business partner are not thrilled about the decision.

Ethan is such a cool hero! He doesn't hesitate but follows Sophia to Florida and the cruise ship. He surprises her and is determined to show her how interested he is in her. It was just what Sophia needed to get her to realize Ethan felt more than just friendship for her.

The romance had both Ethan and Sophia learning new things about each other not just as friends but as lovers. They both have insecurities about this new relationship and while it felt they worked them out a little too quickly, I chalked it up to the cruise ship/holiday atmosphere.

Home for Christmas is a short read so don't expect highly developed characters or any great plot twists. It's fairly predictable. I would have liked more background on both Sophia and Ethan but the short format doesn't allow for that. It's not at all heavy on the holiday theme and could have easily been set during another season with few changes. A greater sense of the holiday season would have been nice.

This was a quick read with a holiday theme but not overly heavy on the Christmas references. There is talk of Christmas since Bailey is working in her family store, The Perfect Christmas, and gets reluctantly involved in hosting various holiday events in the store. She needs to recruit a Santa and as it turns out, a pirate Santa will do.

Bailey Sullivan practically ran from Coronado and her family legacy. She lives in Los Angeles, managing a large law firm. No Ho Ho Hos or reindeer in sight. The last thing she wants is to go back and run the family holiday themed store. When Bailey gets back to Coronado she learns how much she left behind. She's reunited with her childhood best friend and her first love. We see how Bailey learns to open up and form the begins of long term relationships. She has always maintained it's best to get out before things get ugly. A legacy from her father before he took off when she was a child. She learns how wrong that is and I liked seeing the process she goes through to get there. I do think she took a little too long to realize what's really important. Too stubborn for her own good.

Finn Jacobson is in Coronado to take care of his grandmother as she recovers from an illness. He and Bailey were friends as children when Finn would spend the summers at his grandmother's, Bailey's neighbor. They became more than friends when the teen years hit. Then Bailey ran and left Finn heartbroken. Now they're both back and Finn is carrying some serious baggage. I think Finn's issues helped keep this story from being too sweet, lending a seriousness to the plot. That along with Bailey's commitment issues gave the story a nice balance between the humor and holiday spirit.

Bailey and Finn don't seem to have a shot at second chances - she's determined to leave on Christmas Day and he's still having trust issues regarding Bailey. So they try to fight their desires but it's hard to avoid the person you're lusting after when they live right next door. And Bailey does ask Finn for help which puts them together even more. It's sweet and sexy how they battle each other and their lust only to have them fall in love all over again.

The sub-plot of Bailey's mother and step-father trying to work out their differences fell a bit flat for me. I didn't dislike them but I didn't really care if they reconciled or not. There is also Finn's friend Tanner who could have been more fleshed out. He gets a book (Not Another New Year's) but I wasn't left dying to read his story.

Must Love Mistletoe was a fun, sexy romp with some serious issues thrown in the mix.

Thanksgiving Wishes...

It All Started With a Cake...

This past week has been a busy one getting ready for my baby's (sob) birthday. He turned ten today, double digits. It's still hard for me to believe my once little bald baby (he was the only one without hair), has turned into such a great kid.

*No baby pictures since those are all print, not digital. I'm tempted to hire someone to put our boxes and boxes of print pictures on CDs. Hmmm...might just be a job for the teen. :)

About the cake... a few weeks ago I told youngest he needed to get his birthday wish list to me soon so I could start shopping. The topic of cakes came up and I asked him what kind of cake he wanted. Last year I made a castle cake and I was hoping this year I'd get to do something a little easier. Turns out he didn't want me to make his cake he wanted "that Cake Boss guy" to make his cake. LOL I had to break the bad news to him that the possibility was pretty slim and he should stick with me. Now, I should give a little background on youngest, he loves the video game Minecraft. He talks about it all the time and I mean all the time. So he tells me he would like a Creeper cake. What's a Creeper you ask? It's this green thing from Minecraft that blows up. So I Googled and found tons of Creeper info and what started with a request for a cake snowballed into everything Creeper...

I'm not a crafty kind of person but most of this was pretty easy to do. I just printed the Creeper eyes and mouth and glued them on. The t-shirt was the most difficult because I had to make the template, iron it on, paint and hope that the lines stayed straight and the paint didn't bleed under the stencil. I can't tell you how stressful this was. LOL After making the t-shirt, the cake was easy. :)

I decided to only make the Creeper face on the cake since we were going to my mom's and I had to take the cake there. I did find instructions for making a full size Creeper but it takes 2 cakes, 1 for the body and 1 for the legs and head. Thankfully he liked this one just fine. :)

I now have one month until middle's birthday. He said he would like a Wizard 101 themed birthday. o_0 At least the teen is easy - she just wants books and cash. LOL

Are you all having a great summer or getting stuck in the heat waves? I can't believe some parts of the US have actually been hotter than here in Arizona!

Happy Indepence Day...

It's Independence Day here in the states. A day we like to have parades, cookout and shoot off illegal fireworks (looks towards neighbor's house). At my house we will be lazy because it's too hot to do much but jump in the pool. I might talk the boys into going to see the fireworks - there's a place we can see 3-4 different fireworks shows across the valley. Much of this depends on the weather since our monsoon season has started.

The Party's Over...

Okay, we didn't really party a lot but hey, the holidays are over and it's back to the regular schedule. Which can be good, especially for those of us who seem to think candy has no calories during the holidays. :)

I spent much of yesterday sorting through my books and trying to organize the tbr books, the series books and the keeper books. Although I did want a new camera, and still do, I got a new dresser instead. It's something that I've been wanting for a while and I finally found one that I liked and was within our budget. It has 7 drawers, 3 small across the top and 4 larger drawers below. Wanna guess what I put in those drawers? Did you say books? Yep! I'm trying to sort my tbr pile into sub-piles and I decided I needed different areas to keep them. The 4 large drawers are for my "Future" tbr books. Those are the ones I hope to get to within the next few years. The "Pending" tbr books are those that are next in line to move to the "Current" tbr books. Both the Pending & Current tbr books are kept on bookcases. Most of the keepers and series books are in containers either under the bed or in closets. I did use the 3 small drawers for lingerie so as not to feel guilty for buying a dresser solely for books. :)

I also did some weeding of the tbr books and now have 3 of those re-useable grocery bags full of books to take to the UBS. I'm trying to cross check what I have with the library's e-books and cut down on the number of print books I have. There is only so much room to store them and the reality is that it's gotten out of hand.

Oh, and I've found a new author that I'm preparing to gloam - Monica McCarty. I started reading her Highland Guard series. The Chief is the first book and I love it! I've got the second book, The Hawk and book three, The Ranger, just came out. Plus - I have 2 or 3 of her previous books on the Current tbr pile. :) Her website is awesome too. Loads of information on Scotland and the clans with family trees (love those!) character lists, and pictures of her trip to Scotland complete with castles and beautiful scenery. Scotland is one of those places on my list of places to go along with Australia and Alaska. Anyway, I printed some of the character information and and taking notes while reading. It's obvious she did a lot of research and what a great idea to put that information on her website for history geeks like me. :)

I did squeeze in a quick trip to Borders today and used my 50% off coupon to get Tracy Wolff's Unguarded. This one came highly recommend by Kristie and since the Super Romance line is one of my favorites it was an easy choice.

I've also been finishing up writing out thank you cards and poking, prodding and giving the stink eye to the kids to get theirs done. ^_^

The presents have been opened and everyone is happily playing their new video games. LOL It used to be toys but as they get older, it has become video games. I'm off to do some more baking and cooking before we head out to my mom's later. And proof that laundry is never ending, yes, I threw a load of wash in this morning. :D

Checking In...

The end of the week seems to be the busiest time for me lately. This week was a little different because my body decided to play host to a nasty cold. I'm feeling better, this time of year there really isn't any choice. There's just so much to do that I don't have time to be sick. I did take it easy Thursday & Friday, only getting about half of what I wanted to get done. Saturday I was so sleepy, it was crazy! I think sometimes our bodies force us to take a break. I took two naps on Saturday and I'm not a napper. Today I'm slowly getting better, my voice is the most noticeable change. It's gone all Kathleen Turner. I could get a job with one of those 1-900 numbers. ;)

I did find some time to try a new recipe from Louisa Edwards. It's her grandmother's Fresh Apple Cake that she posted at Romancing-The-Book (go there for the recipe). It's easy and delicious! Seriously, the hardest part was chopping the apples. Very quick and easy recipe - I used Granny Smith apples and skipped the nuts. The house smelled heavenly! It has a crispy texture on the outside and moist on the inside. The apple and cinnamon flavor together along with the texture of the chopped apples made this a real treat!

We also got the decorations and tree up. I decided to skip the lights outside this year. I'm just not up to doing it and my husband is working a ton of overtime with little spare time. The boys helped with the decorating and are getting into the spirit. My sister was visiting this past week and last night was her final night here. We all went over to my mom's for dinner and cards. And even though it's sunny and in the 70's here, the winter storm in the Midwest affected even us. My sister's flight back to Atlanta was canceled because the plane was stuck in Minneapolis so she ended up going on a red-eyed. All that snow brings back memories of when I was a kid in the burbs of Chicago, praying for a snow day. LOL We had plenty of them!

I did get some reading done, even remember to read my book for the TBR challenge coming up this Wednesday. And the shopping is coming along okay. Still need a few things for out-of state people that I will get tomorrow and mail tomorrow night when the Post Office is closed and I can used the self-serve machine (no lines). I tried doing most of the shopping online but ended up doing about half and half with Amazon being my go to store for online shopping, no surprise there.

How was everyone's weekend? Read anything you couldn't put down? Did anyone see the new Johnny Depp movie The Tourist? I want to see it (wish AJ wasn't in it) but I'll wait a few weeks, maybe after Christmas. And the kids want to see Jack Black's Gulliver's Travels. I guess we'll see it while they're on winter break. Hard to believe the year is almost over.

What a Weekend!

Wow - I haven't posted since Wednesday! My intentions were good, I've got books to review but RL got in the way but in a good way. Thursday was middle's first band concert. He was nervous but had a great time and looked very comfortable on stage. I didn't get any good pictures, I really need a new camera with interchangeable lenses. After my very old, beloved Pentax died I replaced it about 7-8 years ago with a digital but it has a fixed lens. I told dh there was a Nikon that I researched and it has everything I want. I've had sitting in my cart at Amazon but it's expensive. He, of course, said "Why don't you just get it?" So maybe I will. A combination birthday/Christmas present to myself. :)

He's not crazy about getting his picture taken so I was happy he actually stood still. The concert was packed, probably 150+ people standing. We got a seat because dh took middle early for his call time and then stayed and saved us (me, teen & youngest) seats. We had to park, what seemed like, a mile away. We're walking fast & dh calls wanting to know where we are because the concert is about to start. Of course it started on time so we just made it to our seats. I was just thankful we had seats!

I wasn't expecting it to be so crowded since it was only beginning band - 2 schools. What I didn't know was that the other school had a 4th grade beginning band in addition to 5th grade. Middle's school starts band at 5th grade so this other school made an exception to have a 4th grade band. Instead of being a small concert, middle's band has 29 kids, it turned out to be huge with the 4th grade band having 40 kids & the school's 5th grade band had 53 kids. 122 kids with probably an average of 3, maybe 4 people attending per kid - that's a lot of people to pack into the school cafeteria!

The concert itself was really good. The kids did a great job and middle was just so excited and very handsome, says his very proud mom! LOL After, dh and the teen went home cause it was way past dh's bedtime and the teen had homework. The boys and I went out to dinner to Culver's, middle's choice. Burgers and fries and Concrete Mixer's for the boys which I had to steal a bite from each of them. :)

Friday youngest woke with a headache and fever so we stayed home & he's fine now. Not sure what was wrong with him. Saturday was a trip to the airport to pick up my "big" sis. She's actually smaller than me but she's older so she's the big sis. :) She lives in Atlanta & is here for a week. We headed to my mom's and hung out for a while. Saturday night I cleaned and baked cause Sunday, big sis, my mom and Aunt Fran came over for lunch and hung out at my house being entertained by the kids. My sister doesn't have any kids so I think my kids, especially the boys, are a unique experience for her! It was a fun time, but I forgot to take pictures! There's a big party at my mom's house this Saturday so I'll take pictures then.

I didn't get much reading done this weekend and I've still got to get the Christmas decorations up - I'm surprised the kids haven't asked about the tree. That's tonight and I will get some reviews up too! I did re-read The Unsung Hero but didn't get the review written so I'll try to get that one up tonight maybe? Ha - I've still got shopping to do and cards to send out. And the kids - I'm looking at you youngest - keep changing their Christmas wish lists!

This is such a busy month for everyone. I always feel like I'll never get everything done but somehow I do. I'm trying to do a lot of shopping online - Amazon has been my "mall" but it's still hard for me to buy some things without actually seeing them. The kids have 2 weeks of school left before winter break (2 weeks off). And this is one of the busiest times for dh's company. He's working 10+ hour days and weekends so we don't see much of him. Which is why I do all the shopping, even for me! At least I know I'll like what he gets me. LOL

The long weekend is almost over and I've read very little but still had fun. As a bonus - the house is really clean! LOL Whenever my mom comes over I always clean stuff I normally don't clean. She's not at all picky so not sure why I do it, I just do. :)

And the third picture with my middle kid Ryan and the food - notice the green bags in the wine rack? Those are empty bags of Sun Chips - Christine's influence. LOL Youngest and I love those chips and have been saving the bags to bury once we deem we have enough of them. :D
